STATEMENT ON THE OCCASION OF BULGARIAN LIBERATION DAY
On the occasion of the Liberation Day of Bulgaria, Co-Chairs Senator Yonah Martin and Member of Parliament Shaun Chen, issued the following statement on behalf of the Canada Bulgaria Parliamentary Friendship Group:
“Today we celebrate Bulgarian Liberation Day, an important day for people of Bulgarian descent across Canada and around the world. On March 3, 1878, the Treaty of San Stefano was signed, ending the Russo-Turkish war of 1877-1878. The treaty established the state of Bulgaria, independent of the Ottoman Empire after 500 years of Ottoman rule. March 3rd has become a national day of pride in Bulgaria, celebrated with street parades and cultural events; and Bulgarian flags are flown everywhere, much like our nation’s flag on Canada Day.
