Budget 2016 News Release

23 March 2016

Ottawa, ON — The Liberals are borrowing and spending tens of billions of taxpayer dollars, and to pay the bill, they are raising taxes on families, workers and job-creating businesses. The reckless Liberal plan simply grows the size of government and will do very little to create jobs for Canadians.

“When it comes to spending taxpayer money, the Liberals just can’t help themselves,” said Sen. Martin. “Canadians should be concerned that the Liberals are failing to do what is necessary to encourage the private sector to invest in our economy and create well-paying, high-quality jobs.”

On Tuesday March 22nd, the Liberals introduced their 2016 federal budget. The Liberal budget introduces a nearly $30 billion deficit this year alone, with no clear plan to balance the budget. In fact, by 2019-20 the Liberal Government is admitting it will fail on its election promise to balance the budget and will run a nearly $18 billion deficit; this will increase the federal debt to nearly $720 billion. Furthermore, despite this significant increase in spending there is no clear plan to help get unemployed Canadians back to work.

“This budget will not live up to its promise to create jobs for Canadians,” said Sen. Martin. “The Liberal Government has failed to implement its promise to reduce the small business tax rate to 9%, which was a key part of their election platform. Small business are the backbone of the Canadian economy and instead of helping them, the Liberals are raising taxes on businesses, and driving jobs and investment away.  Businesses will not invest in the Canadian economy if they do not know the cost of doing business.”
