“Beginning on March 1st 1919, after nearly a decade of Japanese military rule and forced assimilation, the Korean people stood together in strength, solidarity, resilience and courage to demand their inherent right to freedom, self-determination and nationhood.
“On that fateful day at two in the afternoon, 33 Korean cultural and religious leaders gathered to read the ‘Proclamation of Independence’ which they based on President Woodrow Wilson’s ‘Fourteen Points’ outlining the right of national ‘self-determination’ proclaimed at the Paris Peace Conference only weeks earlier. That resolute declaration sparked over 1,500 peaceful demonstrations throughout Korea and though the movement did not bring about national independence, it was a catalyst that strengthened national unity and led to the establishment of the Korean Provisional Government in Shanghai.
“Today, the ‘March 1st Movement’ is a national day to observe and reflect on the more than 2 million people who stood bravely together against tyranny, and the thousands who gave their lives in the hopes of a liberated Korea.
