OTTAWA – The Honourable Senator Yonah Martin, today issued the following statement commending Canada’s co-sponsorship of a United Nations’ resolution regarding North Korea.
“The Government of Canada is committed to supporting the efforts of the United Nations to ensure the full enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms of the entire global population” said Senator Martin.
“The continued violations of human rights in Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) are deeply concerning. The Government of North Korea must recognize their responsibility to ensure the full protection of all rights and freedom of each citizen. I commend the efforts of the international community, and in particular Canada’s support, for continued action to protect the rights and freedoms of all citizens in the DPRK” said Senator Martin.
Senator Yonah Martin’s statement comes after Canadian representatives of the United Nation’s Human Rights Council co-sponsored a resolution that expressed deep concerns for the continuing widespread violations of civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights in North Korea. The resolution urges the Government of North Korea to fully respect all human rights and fundamental freedoms of its entire population.
The resolution also urges the Government of North Korea to ensure full, rapid and uninterrupted access of humanitarian assistance and to engage fully with the international community to improve the human rights situation.
